Valentine’s Day Cruise

Valentine's Day Cruise

We had 10 classics and 6 modern cars brave the cold rainy weather on February 14 for a tour of western Shasta County. Before we left Westside Village Shopping Center, everyone received a chocolate Valentine heart. We took them to see Clear Creek Gorge Overlook, Reading’s Bar (there was gold nuggets there in 1848), where the town of Horsetown was in the 1850’s, the Igo Veterans’ Cemetery (more hearts were handed out here), the town of Ono, most of Rainbow Lake Road, the town of Igo, Clear Creek Bridge, Placer Road, and Texas Springs Road. Because of the weather, the tour only lasted 2 hours. Braving the weather were the Blomquists, Rays, Elliots, Turkingtons, David Friscia, Linda Bartlett and Duane Higgins, the Harveys, the Wilsons, the Borges’, the Feesers, the Barrs, the Dickinsons, the MacDonalds, the Bocks, the Maas’ and the Wolters.

Our next tour is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 20, the first day of Spring. Hope the weather cooperates this time! Please save the date. Greg and JoAnn Blomquist

Spring Has Sprung Cruise. March 20, 2021

Twenty-five Shasta Classics cars (18 classics and 7 moderns) braved the beautiful Spring day to join us on an amazing tour. Indications are that all had a good time. There were no glitches☺

The cruise took us through the Market Street Redevelopment District , across Keswick Dam, to the gold mines and French Gulch, the Carr Powerhouse and Whiskey Town. If you stayed to the end, you were able to buy a delicious dessert at Shorty’s Eatery and watch the blacksmiths in Old Shasta.

Our next tour will be Saturday, May 1 as part of the Anderson Community Car Show. This free car show will be held at the Anderson Community Church at 2364 Balls Ferry Road in Anderson. Our member, Tom Turkington, is helping coordinate the show which also includes a free breakfast and donuts and awards. Our tour will start when the car show ends at 11:30 am. We’re still planning out the route but it will probably include a “bring your own lunch” picnic at the end. Contact Tom at 530-513-2669 for information/no charge registration. On Saturday, May 15, we will host another car tour. This time it will include historical and interesting sites in and around the town of Anderson. More information on this one to follow. But put both of these dates on your calendar now. Once again, thank you for the thank yous! Greg and JoAnn Blomquist PS No tour in April because of the Shasta Show ‘N Shines beginning April 18 and ending April 24.

May 15 Anderson Historical Cruise

The weather started out a little misty but it didn’t deter 10 classic and 5 modern cars from meeting at Westwood Village to enjoy unfrozen, month-old donuts. We headed out at 9 am and toured the Blomquist Museum/Shop; Liddell’s Old Hwy 99 Surface Station/ Old Hwy 99 Speed Shop and EzPick’NZ. In addition to their great hospitality, the Liddell’s provided a much-needed bathroom, snacks and drinks. Next we stopped by Fire Station #1, the Veterans’ Walk of Honor and the old Jail in Anderson. Our final stop before lunch was the Anderson Historical Society Museum/School House/Gardens. We had lunch at Anderson River Park right along the Sacramento River. Then it was off for a drive-by parade for our member, Mike Dickinson, who is recovering from a stroke. Mike and Vicki greeted us and seemed very happy to see our old cars. The tour ended on Deschutes Road under sunny skies. It was a wonderful day.

June 5th Date Night

Date Night and the Drive-By Birthday Parade were successes. Nineteen members met at Mary’s Pizza Shack in Anderson for dinner at 5 pm. At 6:30 pm, 7 cars left Mary’s for the Drive-by Birthday Parade in Cottonwood. The birthday boy, Bruce Haynes, was definitely surprised! By the smile on his face, I would say we made his 80th birthday memorable. The tour back to Anderson passed by the future home of the Northern California Veterans Museum and Heritage Center and Sleepy Hollow Pet Memorial Cemetery..Thank you to everyone who participated. Unfortunately, we forgot to take pictures.

June 26 Tour of Lassen

Seven modern cars (no classics but we did have two Corvettes and one Mustang Convertible) took to the back country roads and had a beautiful drive to Mt Lassen National Park.  The fish hatchery is still closed to the public, but we made a quick in and out to see what it looked like.  We added a drive in to Manton to kill time then headed to Mineral for lunch.  Great lunch in a cute, rustic restaurant.  When we reached the south park entrance at 1:30, it was only 84 degrees.  We stopped at the Visitor Center and looked at the geological displays there.  Then we headed out for our drive through the park.  All the popular stops were very crowded but the drive wasn’t.   At the top of the  pass at 2:30 pm and 8500 foot elevation, it was an amazing 73 degrees.  We all stopped at the Manzanita Camp Store and bought ice cream.  At this point, some left us to go home or down to Manzanita Lake to sit and enjoy the water and weather.  The Blomquists and Proscholds headed to the Loomis Museum to see the pictures of the 1914 eruption only to find out that only the gift shop was open because of CDC restrictions.  ðŸ˜¢  By the time we got back into Redding at 4:30 pm, it was a toasty 111 degrees.  Thank you to the Wilsons, Barrs, MacDonalds, Proscholds, Darrel Elliot, the Andersons and their friends from Seattle and the Wolfs for joining us.  This will be our last tour until October.  At that time, we will take you on a historical and just-plain-interesting tour to Red Bluff.  It will be on Thursday, October 14, so put the date on your calendar.

October 14 Red Bluff History Tour

Nine classics and 3 modern cars and their owners left the Anderson Outlets and proceeded to Red Bluff for an amazing day. We made stops at Gaumer’s Gem Museum and the Red Bluff Fire House Museum. We drove by the Historic State Theater, the County Courthouse, the old Air Force Radar facility, the Kelly Griggs’ House Museum, Sacred Heart Church and the Cone and Kimball Clock Tower. We ended up at the William B. Ide Adobe State Historic Park where we ate our lunch on picnic tables with beautiful views of the Sacramento River. Wonderful weather and a wonderful tour.

October 16 Trunk or Treat at Hillside Church

This event was coordinated by Shasta Halloween and Hillside Church. The Wilsons in their Ford Pickup, the Rays in their Mustang, the Blomquists in their ’55 Chevy and Terry Smith, Jennifer and Liam McCoy in Terry’s VW Bug decorated their trunks and handed out bags and bags of candies to an amazing number of trick or treaters, young and old. The costumes were amazing. After the Trunk or Treat, the Blomquists, Wilsons, Rays joined by the Wolters and Ron Tanno went to the Wings of Angels fundraiser at the Sons of Italy’s Lodge. The food was wonderful. Real, authentic pasta and meatballs. The turnout was amazing. The amount of items raffled and auctioned off was unbelievable. Hopefully they raised lots of money for this worthwhile charity.
